Whole grain is a term used to define the seed of the grain which includes all natural parts of the seed. These parts are bran, germ and the endosperm. Bran is the outer layer while germ is the reproductive part of the kernel. Endosperm is the largest part and mainly consists of starchy carbohydrates.

Whole wheat flour includes all three parts of the wheat kernel; bran, germ and endosperm, as opposed to white flours that are made from endosperm only. Endosperm mainly contains starchy carbohydrates and its nutritional value is low compared to the calories it has. On the other hand, bran provides fiber, B vitamins and other minerals and germ is rich in healthy fats, B vitamins, vitamin E and antioxidants. Adding whole wheat flour to your bread improves its nutritional value a lot and enhances its flavor as well.

The whole wheat bread recipe below includes both whole wheat and white flours to yield the perfect taste and texture in bread without missing out on palate satisfaction.
