If cinnamon tea is the first to come to mind while daydreaming about a warming and soothing drink during winter days, ginger tea is the second. Ginger tea is as nutritious and delicious as it is beneficial to the immune system to fight the flu and common cold. It is the perfect beverage for winter along with cinnamon tea.

Ginger is a flowering plant that comes from the same family with cardamom, another spice used in many recipes. What we see in the grocery store as ginger is the roots of the ginger plant.

Ginger plants originated in Southeast Asia. It is known as the first spice that was exported from Asia to Europe. Today ginger is used worldwide as spice for either culinary or medicinal purposes.

Ginger is rich in antioxidants and helps reduce inflammation in the body. It shows antimicrobial properties and has often been used to treat common cold and flu in folk medicine.

Ginger tea is commonly made by simmering fresh ginger in a pot on the stove. However, the recipe below describes how to make ginger tea by steeping using a double tea kettle, a traditional Turkish tea kettle. Making ginger tea in a double tea kettle yields a flavorful but mild ginger tea. Boiling ginger directly can result in a very thick and unpleasant-to-drink tea. Boiling temperature also causes some vitamins in ginger to lose their beneficial value. Making ginger tea in a double tea kettle is the perfect alternative to boiling. It yields a pleasing tea while preserving the nutritional value of ginger.

Ingredients

  • 85 oz (2.5 L) water (27 oz for steeping), filtered or bottled if tap water is of poor quality

  • 4 tablespoons fresh ginger, chopped in small pieces or grated

  • A double tea kettle

  • Some honey or sugar for sweetening (optional)

Directions

  1. Add water to the lower kettle, and put it on the stove to boil. The amount of water should be at least at the capacity of the upper teapot since we will use this water to steep ginger pieces.

  2. Once the water is boiled, add fresh ginger to the upper teapot and pour the boiling water over it. The amount of water you pour should be 27 oz (0.8 L) if you put 4 tablespoons of ginger (approximately 1 tablespoon per cup of water). If your teapot is larger and you want to make more ginger tea, please increase the amount of water and ginger accordingly.

  3. Add more water into the lower kettle, put it on the stove to boil, place the upper teapot over it, and close its lid.

  4. Once the water is boiled, wait 15-20 minutes for ginger to release all its flavor into the water. You can check the taste to decide whether it is steeped sufficiently.

  5. Once the ginger tea is ready, prepare the teacups and pour the infusion in the upper teapot as much as you want, and then fill the rest of the cups with the boiling water from the bottom kettle. You can adjust the taste of ginger tea by adjusting the amount of infusion you pour into the teacups.

  6. You can add lemon or orange juice or sweeten it with honey or sugar at this point if you want.

  7. Your soothing and warming ginger tea is ready!
