Which milk should I use to make caffè macchiato?

It is better to use whole-fat milk because fatty milk froths better. It is also important to use fresh milk. If the expiration date is close, it may not froth well.

How can I froth the milk?

You can froth the milk with a milk frother, French press, or whisker. Whichever you use, you first need to heat the milk to scalding. Then, if you use a milk frother or French press, pour the milk into a tall cup, and froth it by quickly moving the frother or the plunge of the French press up and down. If you use a whisker, pour the milk into a small bowl and whisk it until it bubbles.

Caffe Macchiato Recipe

Caffè macchiato, also known as macchiato and espresso macchiato, is an espresso topped with a small amount of foamed or steamed milk. Macchiato means “spotted” in Italian, so caffè macchiato literally means “spotted coffee”.

The main difference between caffè macchiato and other types of coffee with milk is that the espresso-to-milk ratio is very high in macchiato, so the taste of milk is not dominant in the coffee. It only adds a small touch of flavor.

Caffè macchiato has two versions: One version is the regular macchiato made by adding 1-2 tablespoons of steamed or foamed milk to one shot of espresso. The other version is long macchiato which contains double-shot espresso with 2-4 tablespoons of steamed or foamed milk.

Regular macchiato is served in a demitasse espresso cup, and long macchiato in bigger glass cups. The foamed milk layer is more visible in long macchiato, so the glass is preferred to serve it.
