Pretzel is a German snack made with basic bread ingredients. The difference between a pretzel and regular bread is their shape and cooking method. Pretzels are shaped into a knot by making the ends of long strips from the dough intertwined and twisted back onto itself, while regular bread is in the shape of a loaf. As for the cooking method, pretzels are first boiled and then baked, whereas regular bread is directly baked without boiling.

Ingredients

  • Ingredients to make the pretzels' dough:
  • 1 cup water, warm

  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2¾ cups all purpose flour

  • 2 teaspoons instant dry yeast

  • Ingredients for boiling pretzels:
  • 6 cups water

  • ⅓ cup baking soda

  • Ingredients to be used before baking pretzels:
  • 1 egg, whisked

  • 1 teaspoon coarse salt

Directions

  1. Open the lid of the bread maker and remove the pan from the machine by pulling it upward.

  2. Make sure the pan is clean and both kneading paddles are in place.

  3. Add 1 cup of warm water, butter, sugar, salt, flour, and yeast to the bread pan in the order listed.

  4. Put the bread pan back in the bread machine, pressing it down so that it clicks into its place, and close the lid.

  5. Plug the bread machine into an outlet and press the “Power” button to turn the machine on.

  6. Use the “Program” button to select program #6 for the dough cycle.

  7. Press the “Start” button to start the dough-making cycle.

  8. The machine will let you know by making a beep sound once the dough-making cycle is finished. Open the lid at this time and remove the bread pan from the bread machine.

  9. Gently take the dough out of the bread pan and place it on a floured surface.

  10. Add 6 cups of water and baking soda to a pan, and put it on the stove to bring it to a boil.

  11. Turn on the oven to preheat by setting the temperature to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

  12. While the water-soda mixture and the oven warm up, divide the dough into 6 equal parts, and roll each part into a long rope, about 18 inches long.

  13. Shape each rope into a pretzel shape by making a U-shape first, then intertwining the ends of the rope, and finally pressing the tips of the ends to the bottom of the U. Here is the pretzel shape!

  14. Once the water-soda mixture boils, gently place each pretzel in the boiling water, one at a time, and boil it for 30 seconds.

  15. Remove the boiled pretzel from the pan, and place it on a parchment-lined tray.

  16. Once you boil all the pretzels, brush them with whisked egg, and sprinkle them with salt.

  17. Bake them in the preheated oven for 12 minutes until they are golden brown.

  18. Your pretzels are ready.
