Are egg rolls gluten free?

Unfortunately, most egg rolls found in restaurants or in frozen food sections of grocery stores are not gluten-free. Store-bought egg roll wrappers are not gluten-free either since they contain regular wheat flour. So, it is not safe to make egg rolls at home using store-bought egg roll wrappers unless ensuring that they are gluten-free.

Can I make egg roll wrappers at home?

It is not difficult to make egg roll wrappers at home since they do not have to be rolled out so thin. To do so, you should gather 2 cups of flour, ½ cup of cold water, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of cornstarch in a bowl and knead them very well. Then , divide the dough into two parts and roll out each part into a rectangular shape to ⅛ inch thick. Your egg roll wrappers are ready when you cut 3½-inch squares from the rolled out rectangles.

Cheeseburger Egg Rolls Air Fryer Recipe

Egg rolls are deep-fried savory pastries made with vegetable, meat, or cheese fillings wrapped in a thick flour wrapper in cylindrical shape. They are healthy, nutritious, and so palatable that everyone loves them. They are served as appetizers, or snacks. Kids will be very happy when they see them in their lunch bags.

Egg rolls are traditionally deep-fried but we will make them in the air fryer in this recipe since air fryers are a healthier alternative to deep frying methods. They are also very easy to clean since they do not cause any oil splatter in the kitchen, and are mostly dishwasher safe.

Let’s move on to the recipe below and prepare our egg rolls for our loved ones!

Ingredients

  • Olive oil spray

  • 1 pound ground beef

  • 4 bacon slices, chopped

  • ½ medium white onion, finely chopped

  • 1 teaspoon steak seasoning

  • 8 egg roll wrappers

  • 1¼ cup grated cheddar cheese

  • Some water for sealing

Directions

  1. Preheat the air fryer by setting the temperature to 400°F and the timer to 3 minutes. Once you press the “Start/Pause” button, it will start warming up.

  2. Grease an 8-inch baking dish with olive oil spray, add beef, bacon, onion, and steak seasoning into it, and mix them.

  3. Open the air fryer, place the baking dish on a rack, and close the air fryer.

  4. Set the timer to 5 minutes and press the “Start/Pause” button to begin cooking.

  5. Shake the baking dish halfway through cooking to stir the mixture.

  6. Once the beef and bacon are brown, open the air fryer and remove the baking dish.

  7. Lay egg roll wrappers on a clean flat surface, add 1 to 1 ½ tablespoons of beef mixture and some cheddar cheese to each of them diagonally.

  8. Fold the corners over the filling, roll the wrappers, brush water to the edge at the end, and seal the egg roll.

  9. Place egg rolls into the rotating basket of your air fryer, mist with olive oil spray. You can also put them into the regular air fryer basket if your air fryer does not have a rotating basket. In this case, you should shake the basket halfway through cooking to ensure even cooking.

  10. Open the air fryer, put the egg rolls inside, and close the air fryer.

  11. Adjust the temperature to 375°F and the timer for 12 minutes, and press the “Start/Pause” button to begin frying.

  12. Cook the egg rolls until they are golden brown and crispy.

  13. Once cooked, open the air fryer and transfer the egg rolls into a serving platter.

  14. Serve them warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

  15. Enjoy cheeseburger egg rolls!

  • RECIPE NOTES FOR EGG ROLLS:

You can change the filling of the egg rolls depending on your preference. The overall recipe will not change.

These egg rolls will be gluten-free if you use gluten-free egg roll wrappers.

    HOW TO SERVE EGG ROLLS:

Even though egg rolls are classified as appetizers, you can serve this recipe as a main dish for dinner because the filling is strong enough to fill someone up. A vegetable side dish and some tomato sauce will match these egg rolls perfectly. You can also prefer to prepare a green salad next to it since green salad goes great with any fried pastry with meaty filling.
